The August 1 Rule — How UPSC Age Is Calculated

The UPSC CSE 2026 notification specifies August 1, 2026 as the cut-off date. Your age on August 1 determines eligibility — not your age when you submit the form, not your age on the exam date.

Real example: - Candidate DOB: July 15, 1994 - Age on August 1, 2026: 32 years, 17 days - General category max: 32 years - Result: ✅ ELIGIBLE (will turn 33 only in July 2027 — within limit)

Another example: - Candidate DOB: July 31, 1994 - Age on August 1, 2026: 32 years, 1 day - Result: ❌ NOT ELIGIBLE (crossed 32 before August 1, 2026)

This one-day difference has disqualified many candidates who assumed they were eligible. Always use the calculator with your exact DOB.

EWS Category — UPSC Age Limit

EWS (Economically Weaker Section) candidates were added to UPSC eligibility from 2019. The age limit for EWS is identical to General — 21 to 32 years with 6 attempts. There is no additional relaxation. An EWS Non-Creamy Layer certificate is required at the time of Mains verification.

Minimum Qualification for UPSC CSE

Age eligibility alone is not enough. UPSC CSE also requires: - A Bachelor's degree (any discipline) from a recognised university - Minimum age of 21 years on August 1 of the exam year - Indian nationality (foreign nationals may apply for certain IPS/IFS posts) - Final-year students can appear in Prelims, but must submit proof at Mains

Check Your Eligibility for 2026–2029

Use the year selector (2026 / 2027 / 2028 / 2029) to check eligibility in future years — helpful if you're planning your exam strategy in advance. The August 1 cut-off shifts to that year; age limits remain the same per current notification.

⚠️ Disclaimer: Age limit information is based on the official UPSC CSE notification and is provided for general guidance only. Always verify final eligibility from the official notification at upsc.gov.in before submitting your application.
