SSC doesn't have a single age limit — it has a different limit for every exam, and a different limit for several posts within each exam. Getting this wrong means a rejected application. This guide covers every number, every exception, and gives you a calculator to verify your eligibility in seconds.

Quick Answer: SSC CGL 2026 — General/EWS: 18–32 years (most posts), OBC: 18–35, SC/ST: 18–37. SSC CHSL — 18–27 (General). Cutoff date: August 1, 2026 for CGL (varies per exam). Check instantly → SSC Age Calculator

Last Updated: June 2026 | Based on SSC CGL 2026 official notification

⚠️ Disclaimer: This information is based on SSC CGL 2024-25 and CHSL 2025 notifications. Age limits and cutoff dates change with each notification cycle. Always verify at ssc.gov.in before applying. This article is for general guidance only.

SSC Exams — Age Limit Overview (All Exams)

Exam Minimum Maximum (General) OBC SC/ST EWS
SSC CGL 18 27–32 (post-wise) +3 years +5 years Same as General
SSC CHSL 18 27 30 32 27
SSC MTS 18 25 28 30 25
SSC CPO (SI) 20 25 28 30 25
SSC GD Constable 18 23 26 28 23
SSC Stenographer 18 27 30 32 27
SSC JE (Junior Engineer) 18 32 35 37 32
SSC JHT 18 30 33 35 30

EWS Note: In all SSC exams, EWS candidates get the same age limit as General/UR — no additional relaxation. EWS provides reservation seats, not age benefit.

SSC CGL 2026 — Post-wise Age Limit

SSC CGL has different age limits for different posts — this catches many applicants off-guard:

Post Group Minimum Maximum (General)
Assistant Section Officer (CSS, MEA, SFIO) 20 30
Inspector (Central Excise, Preventive Officer) 18 30
Sub Inspector (CBI) 20 30
Auditor (IG, CAG, CGDA) 18 27
Tax Assistant 18 27
Upper Division Clerk (UDC) 18 27
Data Entry Operator 18 27
Junior Statistical Officer 18 32
Statistical Investigator Grade-II 18 32
Assistant Audit Officer 18 30

Key distinction: Inspector and ASO posts cap at 30 — not 32. If you're 31–32 (General), you can only apply for JSO, Statistical Investigator, and a few other posts — not the full list.

SSC CGL Category-wise Age Table (All Categories)

For posts with 32-year General limit:

Category Maximum Age
General / UR 32 years
EWS 32 years (same as General)
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) 35 years
SC / ST 37 years
PwD — General/EWS 42 years (+10)
PwD — OBC 45 years (+13)
PwD — SC/ST 47 years (+15)
Ex-Servicemen Service period + 3 years

SSC Cutoff Date — The Rule That Changes Every Cycle

This is where most candidates make mistakes.

UPSC has a fixed August 1 cutoff every year. SSC does not.

SSC CGL 2026 cutoff: August 1, 2026 — but this is specific to this cycle.

SSC CHSL cutoff: Last date of application (varies each notification).

Pattern from past cycles:

  • SSC CGL 2023: January 1
  • SSC CGL 2024: August 1
  • SSC CGL 2026: August 1 (confirmed in 2026 notification)
  • SSC CHSL: Last date of application — always check notification

⚠️ Never assume the cutoff date. Download the specific SSC notification from ssc.gov.in and find the "Age Limit" section — the cutoff date is explicitly stated there.

Practical impact: A candidate born on February 15, 1994 is:

  • Eligible for CGL 2026 if cutoff = August 1, 2026 (age: 32 years, 5 months) → ❌ NOT ELIGIBLE (General, max 32)
  • Wait — born February 15, 1994 → on August 1, 2026 = 32 years 5 months → over 32 limit → NOT eligible for General
  • But for OBC: max 35 → ✅ ELIGIBLE (2 years 7 months remaining)

Practical Examples

Example 1 — SSC CGL, General, 27-year post

  • DOB: October 5, 1998
  • Cutoff: August 1, 2026
  • Age: 27 years, 9 months, 27 days
  • Tax Assistant max (General): 27 years → ❌ NOT ELIGIBLE
  • JSO max (General): 32 years → ✅ ELIGIBLE

Example 2 — SSC CHSL, OBC

  • DOB: June 20, 1996
  • Cutoff (assumed last date): September 30, 2026
  • Age: 30 years, 3 months, 10 days
  • OBC max (CHSL): 30 years → ❌ NOT ELIGIBLE (3 months 10 days over)
  • Lesson: OBC CHSL max is exactly 30 — cutting it close costs you the exam

Example 3 — SSC MTS, SC/ST

  • DOB: March 3, 1996
  • Cutoff: September 30, 2026
  • Age: 30 years, 6 months, 27 days
  • SC/ST max (MTS): 30 years → ❌ NOT ELIGIBLE
  • SSC CHSL (SC/ST max 32): ✅ ELIGIBLE — check qualification for CHSL

Age Relaxation Rules — SSC

OBC Relaxation (+3 years)

OBC Non-Creamy Layer candidates get 3 years added to the General maximum:

  • CHSL General max 27 → OBC max 30 years
  • CGL General max 32 → OBC max 35 years
  • MTS General max 25 → OBC max 28 years

Certificate requirement: Valid OBC NCL certificate issued by competent authority. Check expiry — old certificates (3+ years) may be rejected.

SC/ST Relaxation (+5 years)

SC/ST candidates get 5 extra years:

  • CHSL General max 27 → SC/ST max 32 years
  • CGL General max 32 → SC/ST max 37 years
  • MTS General max 25 → SC/ST max 30 years

PwD Relaxation (+10/13/15 years)

For SSC CGL (General limit 32):

  • PwD General: 42 years
  • PwD OBC: 45 years
  • PwD SC/ST: 47 years

EWS — No Extra Relaxation

EWS candidates follow the same limits as General in every SSC exam.

SSC vs UPSC — Key Differences

Factor SSC CGL UPSC CSE
Age (General) 18–32 21–32
Minimum age 18 21
Cutoff Aug 1 (2026, varies) Aug 1 (always fixed)
Attempts No limit 6 (General)
Education Graduation Graduation
Post level Group B/C Group A (IAS, IPS)

Key advantage of SSC over UPSC: No attempt limit. If you're within the age range, you can appear every year. UPSC forces strategic attempt management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: SSC CGL has age limit 18–32, but I'm 31 — which posts can I apply for? At 31 (General), you can apply for JSO, Statistical Investigator Grade-II, and similar posts capped at 32. You CANNOT apply for Tax Assistant, UDC, DEO (max 27), or Inspector/ASO posts (max 30). Use the calculator for a specific verdict.

Q: Is SSC CHSL age limit the same every year? The limit (27 for General) has been consistent for recent cycles, but the cutoff date varies. CHSL typically uses the last date of application as cutoff. Always read the notification.

Q: I qualified OBC certificate last month — is it valid for SSC this year? Yes, a fresh certificate works. SSC requires the OBC NCL certificate to be valid (not expired) at the time of application. Typically, certificates are valid for 3 years from issue date.

Q: Can a 33-year-old OBC candidate appear for SSC MTS? No. OBC max for MTS is 25 + 3 = 28 years. At 33, SSC MTS is not an option. Consider SSC CGL (OBC max 35 for JSO/Stat posts).

Q: What if I appear for both SSC CGL and CHSL in the same year? Completely allowed — separate applications, separate fees, separate exams. Many candidates apply for multiple SSC exams simultaneously.

Q: SSC GD Constable age limit is 18–23 — very narrow window. Any relaxation? OBC gets 23 + 3 = 26 years. SC/ST gets 23 + 5 = 28 years. PwD gets +10 on base. Ex-Servicemen get separate rules. Even with relaxation, GD Constable has one of the narrowest windows in SSC.

Q: I'm 35 years old (General) — is any SSC exam still open? No SSC exam is open for 35-year-old General category candidates. Maximum for SSC CGL (General) is 32. Consider Railway NTPC Graduate (max 36), or State PSC exams which often go up to 40+ for General.
